Appian Integration Services
Connect Appian to your core systems, databases and APIs so processes run on live data — without re-keying, swivel-chair work or brittle workarounds.
What is Appian integration?
Appian integration is how an Appian application exchanges data with, and triggers actions in, other systems. Appian provides connected systems and integration objects for calling external APIs, Web APIs for exposing Appian data and actions to other applications, and Data Fabric for working with data from multiple sources through a common record model.
Most enterprise Appian applications depend on integration: customer data from a CRM, reference data from an ERP, documents from a content system, identities from a directory. The quality of those integrations — error handling, security and performance — largely determines how reliable the application feels to its users.
We build integrations as part of Appian development services or as a dedicated workstream within an Appian implementation.
Our Appian integration services
Appian-native integration first, custom components only where needed.
REST API integration
Call external REST services through connected systems and integration objects, with authentication, error handling and logging.
Web APIs
Expose Appian data and actions as secured endpoints so other systems can start processes or retrieve status.
Database integration
Read and write relational data through record types and SQL, with attention to query performance.
Data Fabric & records
Bring data from multiple sources into Appian records so users work from one consistent view.
Enterprise system integration
Connect Appian with CRM, ERP, document management and identity systems, typically through their APIs.
RPA for systems without APIs
Use Appian RPA where a legacy application has no usable interface — as a deliberate exception rather than a default.
Common Appian integration patterns
Process triggered by another system
An event or API call in an external system starts an Appian workflow.
Lookup and enrichment
Appian retrieves customer, product or account data during a task so users never re-key it.
Write-back on completion
Approved outcomes are written back to the system of record automatically.
Status for other channels
Web APIs let portals and other applications show the current status of an Appian case.
Document exchange
Documents generated or collected in Appian are filed in your content management system.
Scheduled synchronisation
Reference data kept current on a schedule where real-time calls are not needed.
Our Appian integration process
- 01
Map
Identify systems, data, ownership, and the direction and timing of each exchange.
- 02
Design
Choose the integration pattern, authentication method, error handling and monitoring approach.
- 03
Build
Develop connected systems, integrations and Web APIs, using test stubs where target systems are not yet available.
- 04
Test
Test success paths, failures, timeouts and volumes with the owners of each connected system.
- 05
Monitor
Logging and alerting so failed integrations are visible and recoverable in production.
Why work with SOS on Appian integration?
Appian-native first
We use Appian’s built-in integration capabilities before adding custom components.
Failure handling built in
Retries, clear error states and logging designed in, not discovered in production.
Security conscious
Credentials held in connected systems, least-privilege access and secured Web APIs.
Works with your teams
We coordinate with the owners of each connected system to agree contracts and test data.
Ways to engage SOS
Integration work can be a standalone project, part of a wider application build, or handled by an Appian developer in your team.
Appian Consulting
Architecture, process design, technical assessments and implementation advisory.

Mainly through connected systems and integration objects for calling external APIs, Web APIs for letting other systems call Appian, database connections for relational data, and Data Fabric for presenting data from multiple sources as Appian records.
Usually, yes — through an API, a database or a file exchange. Where a system offers none of those, Appian RPA can automate its user interface, although an API is preferable wherever one can be made available.
Yes. Appian Web APIs can expose an endpoint that starts a process or returns data, secured so that only authorised systems can call it.
Yes. Monitoring and fixing integrations is part of our Appian managed services.
