Start with your own requirement
Before comparing providers, be clear about what you need. Are you deciding what to build, building something already defined, adding capacity to an existing team, or supporting applications in production? Each calls for different strengths — advisory depth, delivery capability, available developers or reliable support — and a provider that is strong in one may be average in another.
Look for relevant Appian experience
General low-code or BPM experience is useful, but Appian has its own design patterns and constraints. Ask about work similar to yours: the type of process, the integrations involved and the scale of users and data. Ask who would actually do the work and what their Appian experience is, not only the experience of the company as a whole.
Be clear about who owns delivery
Some engagements make the partner responsible for an outcome; others place their developers under your direction. Both are valid, but the contract, governance and expectations differ. Agree upfront who owns scope, design decisions, quality and timelines.
Ask about engineering practices
Low-code applications still need engineering discipline. Ask how the team designs data models, reuses rules and components, reviews changes, tests, and deploys between environments. Specific, consistent answers are a good sign; vague references to speed are not.
Plan for life after go-live
Most of an application’s life happens after launch. Ask how the partner hands over documentation and knowledge, whether they offer ongoing support and enhancements, and how a support engagement would be scoped.
Check how the team can scale
Requirements change. A good partner can add or reduce developers, bring in an architect or analyst when needed, and move from team extension to delivered project — or the reverse — without starting again.
Verify claims directly
Ask for evidence of any partnership status, certifications or client references a provider mentions, and confirm them with the relevant source where you can. A trustworthy partner will be comfortable with that.
A short checklist

- Named people with Appian experience on your engagement
- Clear ownership of scope, design, quality and timelines
- Defined practices for data design, reuse, testing and deployment
- A support and handover plan for after go-live
- Flexibility to scale the team up or down
- Claims you can verify
